Indonesia promotes Sapta Nirwandar to vice minister of tourism

Sapta Nirwandar

INDONESIA Ministry of Culture and Tourism director general of marketing, Sapta Nirwandar, has been promoted to vice minister of culture and tourism, a new post for the ministry.

Nirwandar’s appointment by Indonesia President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono is part of a wider cabinet reshuffle, which also sees the appointment of vice ministers of finance, health, and foreign affairs.

In a phone interview with TTG Asia e-Daily, Sapta said: "The president has said that Indonesia's tourism is an important sector for the country. He wants bigger achievement from this sector, but he also sees greater challenges ahead.”

"Therefore, he has asked me to assist the minister (Jero Wacik) and work with him to strengthen the policy, strategy to achieve a higher goal in the next three years (until the next presidential election)."

Nirwandar is expected to be sworn in next week.

Commenting on the appointment, Indonesia Congress and Convention Association chairman, Iqbal Allan Abdullah, said: "The appointment of a vice minister means the jobs of the respected ministries are too big to be handled only by a minister and its director generals.”

"The opening of a new post in culture and tourism means that the government is more serious about this sector."

Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association chairman, Yanti Sukamdani, said: "Pak Sapta is the right man to sit in the new post. He has proven capable of doing his job in marketing and has been working closely with the industry.”

"We hope that he (Sapta) will continue to work closely with us in his new capacity in improving the policy and tourism strategy going forward," Sukamdani added.
